“A Guy Came to My Door, Asked to Fly Over My Roof, and Here is Why I Let Him.”
A man came to my door and mentioned he was flying roofs in the neighborhood to test his software program. It is designed to find damage from weather events, especially hail storms. He said it was free of charge, and most of the roofs they flew had no damage. Either way, there would be nothing out of pocket for me.
At first, I was skeptical and wondered if he was looking to see inside my windows or scope my property because my ex was causing problems again. However, our neighborhood had recently been hit by a hail storm, and a few of my neighbors said they had insurance adjusters come out. Even with their replacement policies, they would need to pay significant expenses.
I asked, “How good is your software at assessing damage?”
“So far, it is about 96% and when we are able to give roof owners the proof they need, they cannot be denied most or all the replacement costs,” he replied.
I said, “They told one of my neighbors around the corner that it was old damage and it wouldn’t be covered.”
“Yeah, that’s what she told us and why we are imaging her roof right now. You can see aging on a roof and it’s a lot different than fresh hail damage that splits the shingle but makes it hard for the eye to see. We believe in what we built so we are giving it away.”
I looked at him skeptically. “Come on, what’s the catch?”
“For you, none. Since we estimate for the best roofers around here, they pay us like they would have paid their own estimators,” he replied. At least with us, their guys don’t have to risk any injuries on roofs they aren’t being paid for.”
“I heard lots of construction guys have drones,” I asked.
“They do, but they use them to size up the roof for the numbers. They can see blatant damage but not what our software can. That’s where we can be precise,” he replied. “So do we have your permission?”
I looked at him and said, “Yes. I don’t think you will find anything but it will be good to have proof right now that it wasn’t old damage.”
He handed me a form and said, “Please fill out all you are comfortable with. We need at least a first name and an email to send you your report. If there is damage, we will contact you and bring out a roofer to give you the claim estimate. Like you said, you probably don’t have anything but it is good to know now. Just initial the permission area.”
I nodded and watched him walk to his truck, pull out a drone, and begin. I walked nearby and watched him precisely control that drone within three to four feet of the roof and get his images. In 15 minutes, he was done.
“Here is my card,” he said, exchanging it for the form. “You should have your report tomorrow.”
The next day, I had my report. The drone’s images showed an area I could see from the ground that had eight direct hits. I walked outside, and I couldn’t see anything. No other damage was noted, and the insurance company had to replace the affected area. I told several of my friends about it, and they are having their own roofs inspected.
